Sacramento's Rainbow Heartbeat: The LGBT Community Center

Cultivating such a vibrant LGBTQ+ culture and community in Sacramento takes a village: and at the heart of that village is the Sacramento LGBT Community Center.

Pride and Beyond

The Sacramento LGBT Community Center&#x;s flagship event is the annual Sacramento Pride March & Festival. This collaborative effort brings together queer- and ally-led organizations in the city, dozens of businesses, local vendors, and international superstars to generate a dazzling showcase of community spirit.

Executive Summary:

We are the largest LGBTQ+ organization in Northern California. Much like the LGBTQ+ rights movement, we struggled for survival over much of our 45 year history. Originally a special assistance program for LGBTQ+ people, especially those with HIV/AIDS, we evolved to provide youth programs, peer support, and community resource navigation, but remained small and volunteer driven. As LGBTQ+ people gained legal rights, we became more integrated and deeply engaged with the community. Over the last decade, we diversified our leadership, increased the visibility of population disparities, advocated for public funding, and invested in partnerships to impact more LGBTQ+ people than anyone in Sacramento. In we had a $, budget and 9 employees. Today, we have 52 staff positions, a nearly $6 million budget, and the broadest array of services offered by and for the local LGBTQ+ community. The Center works to create a region where all LGBTQ+ people thrive; we support health and wellness, advocate for equity and justice, and work to uplift our diverse and culturally rich LGBTQ+ community.

  • An end to youth homelessness
  • Medical tend and employment opportunities for transgender people, equitable with those of cisgender colorless men
  • No new HIV infections
  • Ongoing coordination among all LGBTQ+ serving organizations
  • Civic institutions where LGBTQ+ people are equitably represented and engaged
  • LGBTQ+ older adults having affirming housing, long term protect, and social activities where they are safe and welcome
