He has previously spoken about social media users "pressuring us to come out when maybe we're not ready".
The star, who has also appeared in Elton John biopic Rocketman and the TV adaptation of His Dark Materials, tweeted in May: "Twitter is so humorous man. Apparently some people on here know my sexuality better than I do"

Prior to the social media publish, Connor had been facing mounting accusations of queerbaiting due to his role as Nick in the popular Netflix coming-of-age series. Connor stars on Heartstopper as a upper school jock coming to terms with his own bisexuality. While Connor did not verb exactly why he felt forced to come out, he posted the message weeks after he said he was "deleting Twitter" amid accusations of queerbaiting, or benefiting from appearing as queer without claiming the community explicitly. That followed the emergence of photos showing him holding hands with Maia Reficco, his co-star in “A Cuban Girl’s Guide to Tea and Tomorrow.”
