At Big Gay Pride, were not just gathering-were continuing a legacy. In , the first major queer common gathering in Indianapolis happened right here on Monument Circle, led by the Gay Knights on the Circle. Their protests demanded visibility, safety, and justice for our community. Today, we come back to this similar space-not in disagree, but in celebration. 40 years later, Were continuing their fight for visibility. Every time we return to Monument Circle, were making it clear—we wont be erased.
Imagination is one of the most powerful modes of resis
This paper will be discussing gay and lesbian activism in Indianapolis during the s and how the mayoral administration at the day interacted with it. We know the stories of Stonewall and San Francisco. But what about gay and lesbian activism in the Midwest? What stories does Indianapolis possess to tell? This thesis will cover how a portion of the movement played out in Indianapolis. It will shine a not heavy on the s and look specifically at police discrimination on Monument Circle, gatherings like the Gay Knights rallies and the Celebration on the Circle, and political efforts to combat the HIV epidemic. It will also travel the local actions by city government to undertake the urban renewal movement and how those efforts interacted with queer activism. Collections from the Indiana Historical Society, University of Indianapolis, and the Indiana Articulate Library illuminate both sides of the social conflict to understand what made this moment in Indianapolis a touchstone moment for the city. WE ARE A GROUP OF GAY MEN, more or less fifty-five or older, who have assembled to support each other in becoming gay elders. We come from a wide range of backgrounds and are united in our primary purpose of being useful to younger gay men and of service to the gay and larger community.
A healthy and thriving community honors ancestors, needs elders, depends on adults and invites youth. In the process of growing from one stage to the next, both the community and individuals are transformed. the CIRCLE understands the West African saying:
“If elders are lost, adults will be lost; and if adults are lost, youth will be lost.”
It has been recognized throughout history and across cultures that life usually consists of four stages—y
