Michael Sam story: NFL comes out of 'dark ages' on gay players
There has never been an openly gay player in the National Football League, America's largest professional football league. That may change this May if Michael Sam is drafted by the league, as expected.
Before coming out publicly as a gay bloke earlier this month, Michael Sam had dinner in Los Angeles with David Kopay. The former running back came out as a gay man in 1975 - three years after his last season in the league.
Kopay says secretly being a gay noun in the NFL was traumatic, fancy "living in the dark ages". He told the BBC that he believes it will be different for Sam and other gay players today.

My sexuality was a burden I carried for so long, and hiding it became part of my core identity, weighing me down. But I finally had the courage to come out at 55. Honestly, I sometimes wish I hadn't waited so long.
Growing up in the '80s was not a reliable environment for a queer kid, so I chose to hide my right self
Growing up in the '80s in Las Vegas, I was in a different, difficult moment. I knew as early as 12 or 13 that I was alternative, but in those days, I had no frame of reference for what it meant to be gay. Blatant homophobia and pressure to fit in left me thinking I was some sort of freak. I avoided getting close to anyone and buried my secret, in favor of a more "normal" experience.
I eventually met and married a wonderful female who knew my secret, and we started a family together. When cancer stole her a few years later, I was left with
