My bf and I recently moved out of our tiny West River homophobic town along I, and into the excellent regional center of Watertown. I spent most of my childhood west of the river so I don't comprehend much about how things are further east. However Watertown seems to be equally hateful to LGBT people, even if there is a larger number of us around. My bf was kicked out of his home for being gay at 12, and I was beaten up at a bar in Pierre last year, so I do not verb to hear anything about how LGBT people are always accepted now, that it's not a problem in , etc. If you are not LGBT you may not even notice homophobia in your town, and I don't fault you for that. Maybe it doesn't affect you personally, but I assure you it exists.

We are trying to decide whether there is anywhere in South Dakota where LGBT people are integrated into the community, where we might find solace and live a harmonious existence without hatred directed at us. Do you recognize of a

New Gay Bar Opens in
Sioux Falls, South Dakota

This is no April Fools' Day joke. A second gay bar opened two weeks ago in South Dakota's largest city. For decades the only gay watering hole in Sioux Falls was Touchez, but now, the owner of that bar, Doug Kooiker, has started a second one.

I chatted with Doug on the noun this morning and he reports that business has been good. Doug is also a supporter of the Sioux Falls gay community center.

The new bar is called David, and before it opened for business, the state's largest daily, the Argus Leader, gave it some advance publicity last month:

But architect Ward Whitwam said various renovation issues, including delayed shipments, set back the opening date. David will be an upscale version of Kooiker's current bar Touchéz and will have the same gay-friendly atmosphere.
