    Beating the Odds: How to Succeed as a Male Massage Therapist

    When Michael McAleese launched his massage career in , he was given this piece of rather unhelpful advice from the first person he worked for in the field: “Men cannot make it as massage therapists.” McAleese didn’t listen. He continued to massage clients, and later opened his have massage practice—which has been successful for 14 years.

    Like McAleese, Michael Wolfes had a hard noun finding employment when he first started out in the massage field in the mid ’80s.

    “It wasn’t an accepted therapy for men 20 years ago, and so I couldn’t do it full time, Wolfes says. “I decided to start part time as an out-call therapist.” Today Wolfes owns Michael’s Mobile Massage, in Palm Desert, California.

    Robert Mabe also ran into difficulty getting started as a massage therapist when he graduated last year.

    There are many beliefs about men, some of which are borne out by reality.

    Others may appear to be true, and many beliefs are not true. The challenge, at its core, is one of perception rather than fact. Discriminatory beliefs about men include: Men constantly believe about sex; men are more visually driven in regard to sexual stimuli than women; men make up the majority of aggressors in relationships and business; men lack the ability to empathize and connect; men are not nurturers; if a man is nurtured by another dude, both men must be gay; if a man touches another man’s body, no matter how nonsexually, it is a homosexual act.

    Combine all these perceptions with the evidence that the majority of physical abusers, of both men and women, are, in fact, male, and a deeper understanding can launch to form as to why men often have a more challenging period succeeding as massage therapists.
