  • Denmark has jumped seven places to achieve second spot in the ranking. The reason for Denmark’s hop is that it is taking the lead in filling in anti-discrimination gaps in current legislation, including the equal treatment law, which covers health, education, employment, goods and services, and the penal code to include sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and sex characteristics as aggravating factors in despise crime.

    • However, local laws build some islands less friendly to the queer community than others.
    • The following Caribbean destinations are where I've felt the most welcome as an LGBTQIA+ traveler, plus local tips for each.

    I'm a white, cisgender gay travel writer. And while my experience could never show that of all queer people, I have found the Caribbean to be among the safest and friendliest places for LGBTQIA+ travelers.

    As travelers become more judicious with their cash and PTO, I regularly locate myself assessing how truly queer-friendly and safe a destination is before recommending it to others, or planning a trip myself.

    Malta, Canada, New Zealand, Spain and Portugal are the most gay friendly countries for LGBTQIA+ travellers to venture to this year. Belgium stagnates and due to the advancing countries, it is now 21st on the list. 

    The updated Spartacus Gay Explore Index provides an overview of the situation of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex people in a total of countries and regions. In addition to Malta, which already took first place in , Canada, Modern Zealand, Spain and Portugal have now also moved to the top.
